Berlin in detail. For centuries, Berlin was largely eclipsed by Vienna, Leipzig and other European cities when it came to music. In East Germany, a key figure was Hanns Eisler, composer of the country's national anthem. Cabaret may have been born in s Paris, but it became a wild and libidinous grown-up in s Berlin. Jazz was the dominant sound, especially after American performer Josephine Baker's headline-grabbing performances at the Theater des Westens dressed in nothing but a banana skirt. The most successful Schlager singing group was the a cappella Comedian Harmonists, who were famous for their perfect vocal harmonies, which sounded like musical instruments. Friedrich Hollaender was also a key composer in the cabaret scene, noted for his wit, improvisational talent and clever lyrics. Like so many other talents including Weill and Brecht , Hollaender left Germany when the Nazis brought down the curtain, and continued his career in Hollywood. Hindemith explored the new medium of radio and taught a seminar on film music.
